Like the Tour De France, the Tour Of Spain will be holding stages outside its domestic borders. The idea for the first stage is fantastic: The Assen TT circuit in the Netherlands.
Assen is currently home of the Moto GP Dutch Grand Prix. It has seen some legendary riders cross over the start-finish line including, Barry Sheen, Kenny Roberts, Mick Doohan and the great Valentino Rossi. Now, the excitement of the opening time trial of the Vuelta comes to this legendary race track. The event should provide an interesting juxtaposition as the two wheeled vehicles of the engine-less variety hare around this great racetrack.
I’m intrigued to see how they behave. Will they be like cycling fans, pumping their fists and screaming encouragement at the cyclists as the burst every lung to get around the course in the quickest time? Or will they be more like motor bike fans who tend to be a bit more relaxed until they see something spectacular happen.
Either way, lets hope that there will be a big crowd for the occasion.
